Japan did not stay still long enough to become the trip we had planned.

We carried stuffed animals onto crowded buses. We ate noodles from convenience stores. We waited for rides that broke down and squeezed through aquariums, museums, parks, temples, and train stations with children in tow. Sometimes the most important part of the day happened after the attraction closed, when everyone was tired and there was nowhere left to go.

There were beautiful places. There were difficult days. There were moments when one of the kids fell asleep against us, or a quiet room suddenly became the only place we wanted to be. We came looking for Japan and kept finding our family.

My suitcase rattled over the sidewalk, bumping against my heels as I dragged it toward 7-Eleven.

A pedestrian stepped aside.

Then another.

I looked down at the giant blue case.

“Hopefully, this is the last time.”

Two weeks of Japan were packed inside it: four smaller bags, clothes, and souvenirs, all crammed into the largest suitcase we could check on an airplane.…
